Thousands gathered on Sunday, September 29, 1996 to celebrate the 13th annual Alan Ross Texas [gay] Freedom Parade. This year's theme was diversity, of which there was plenty. More than 100 religious and social-service groups, nightclubs, cheerleaders, musicians, drag queen troupes, sports clubs, and student organizations marched.
The parade ground stretched about a mile down Cedar Springs Road. Soon enthusiastic spectators, restrained by baracades lining each side of the street would cheer and raise their hands to grab the thousands of dollars of candy thrown from the floats.
Our float was #41 of the hundred floats. Here some of us are gathered in front of our float shortly before the march.
Here we are tossing candy from the float and waving to the crowds.
Most of the loudest cheers were saved for P.F.L.A.G. [Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays]. Many chapters were there including those of Dallas and Fort Worth. Unfortunately, we were unable to get a good photo.
Everybody loves a parade.
